I'm Skylar Edwards, the creator and founder of Northpoleplaytime. I'm a self-taught multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Metro Detroit, Michigan, with a focus on fashion design and construction. I develop each garment from self-drafted patterns into finished pieces, working closely with the material and the body throughout the entire process.
My vision stems from the relationship between nature and utility, the places where protection and function become ornamental and personal. The intelligence in nature found beyond the aesthetics of color, shape, and texture is a purity involving camouflage, insulation, safety, and attraction. Visual language communicates the utilitarian underbelly of what is created.
This philosophy extends into my approach to clothing. I’m interested in the precision of tailoring, but equally in the irregularities that emerge through making; the way a garment gathers, folds, protects, or moves with the body. The deeply involved process of drafting, cutting, fitting, and stitching creates pieces that are inherently individual, with a character that cannot be replicated from mass consumer production.
Northpoleplaytime asks the question "how can a garment remain practical and functional without sacrificing the intimacy and poetry of delicate composition?"
I’m interested in how modern needs can be met through traditional practices of making. Good clothing should be worn often. It should become familiar to the person wearing it, adapt to their rituals, and develop a history through use. It should be engineered to endure movement and weather while still feeling familiar identifiably enough to live in.
clothing is a way of comfort, protection, and preparedness. This can create a particular kind of freedom that comes from being properly equipped for your surroundings. This is where my interest in tailored lounge and outdoor wear comes full circle: garments designed for the environment with the attention to detail of house designers.
I construct, release, and sell each piece through a personal lens. Northpoleplaytime operates primarily through auctions and preorders. Unique collection pieces are offered through auction, while selected designs are made available for preorder through my website. Preorders allow a garment to be made specifically to size and with the time required to construct it properly, rather than producing excess inventory simply for the sake of availability. I intentionally keep production small as of now, as I only take on as much work as I can prioritize generously. I do not compete with the thundering volume of a factory, as Northpoleplaytime is an ongoing study of the human condition to its environment and the planet we call home
